How do you understand this first article, Foreknowledge?
That depends on the context, but generally I see proginosko as denoting foreordination.

Thanks for answering. I wonder if it does not refer to God the Father's knowledge of His children before He gave them to Christ Jesus.
I find the information you are providing very interesting as I am not very acquainted with American Baptist history. I do know some, but not much. I have mainly studied European Baptist history.
Might you possibly have a simple table/timeline that shows the times and reasons for these splits? I would be interested in seeing one. Thanks again for your interesting blog. John

God's knowledge and decrees are both eternal, without beginning.
The major dates for the divisions involving Calvinism and the Hardshells are
1. 1832 Black Rock Address and formal separation from Baptists who supported missions.
2. 1880's -1890's the Hardshells split over the extent of predestination and over the issue of means in regeneration, and Sunday Schools and missions.
3. 1920's - 1930's the Hardshells split over musical instruments in worship, which the "Progressives" supported, together with other things, like ministerial education, Bible classes, etc.
