Berkouwer on Election

The following are some excerpts from Berhouwer on "Divine Election" that I felt worth saying "amen" by publishing them here in the "Baptist Gadfly."

"God's election is sovereign and gracious, and hence not based on any human quality. It can therefore never lead to self exaltation. That is why there is an unfathomable abyss between an arrogated election and the election of God (cf. Rom. 8:33)."

"Both in the fellowship and in the individual life, election rules out all pretentiousness, all self-exaltation, and all self-election (Gal. 3:28)."

"Israel interpreted election apart from faith and thus drew illicit conclusions from it."
